Topics I've Started

  1. A Promise Is A Promise...

    Posted 6 Jun 2004

    So I'm Eighteen.

Also, um. Thanks for the birthday wishes.

I only have one picture and I really dislike it! Can't you all wait until I've gone and gotten myself tattooed? Or at least until I've gotten a decent photographer...

Maybe you should all wait until I move out to Arizona. It's only two months. And then Spooky can take requests? Although if I've really dissappointed anyone I'll post the one I've got.
  2. Day Of Silence

    Posted 21 Apr 2004

"Please understand my reasons for not speaking today. I am participating in the Day of Silence, a national youth movement protesting the silence faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people and their allies. My deliberate silence echoes that silence, which is caused by harrasment, prejudice, and discrimination. I believe that ending the silence is the first step toward fighting these injustices. Think about the voices you are not hearing today.

What are you going to do to end the silence?"

So that's what the cards read. I participated in this event today. It was horrifically difficult. I am so dependant on communication, I was carrying around a marker and writing on myself and on paper and even the floor in gym class. The worst was trying to communicate in the yearbook room. Although, scrawling "CAPTIONS NOW OR ELSE YOU DIE" on the board was the highlight of my day.

The other thing that was good was free pizza and cake afterwards.

A lot of people seemed really touched by the experience, but the problem is that those people are already sensitive to these issues. I don't think we opened up eyes or changed minds.

One girl said that she felt the silence spoke volumes because one girl passed her a note that said "Thank you. I appreciate that you have the courage that I don't have."

At the end of the day, I didn't feel more sympathetic towards alternate sexualities. I was more touched by the lack of communication. I'm almost in the mood to hug a mime.

    Did anyone else participate?
